The Blood Donation Process

You can expect to spend about 1 hour at our blood donation site – the actual blood donation itself takes approximately 6-12 minutes.

 Registration

      1.      You will sign in with your campus organization or residence hall information (for rewards competition).
2.     You will be asked to read eligibility information about donating blood.
3.     You will be given a free KU blood donor t-shirt.
4.     You will be asked to show a photo I.D. card
5.     You will then complete a health history questionnaire.

 Health History & Mini-Physical

      1.      A blood services staff person will visit with you confidentially about your health history.
      2.     To insure your good health for that day, your temperature, pulse, blood pressure and iron level will be taken. Your iron level will be tested from a few drops of blood taken from your finger tip.

 Blood Donation

      1.      You will be escorted to a blood donor bed.
2.     Your arm will be disinfected and a needle inserted for the blood drawing process.
3.     In approximately 6-12 minutes, when a pint of blood has been collected, the needle will be removed and a band-aid placed on your arm.
4.     You will then be escorted to the refreshment area.

 Canteen Area

1.      You will be asked to sit in the canteen area for 15 minutes while you enjoy refreshments.

When you leave the blood donation site, you will take with you a wonderful feeling of knowing that you helped to save up to 3 lives with your single blood donation. In 6-8 weeks you will receive a blood donor card in the mail.  This card will have your blood type on it and the number of your blood donations.  This will be updated every time you give blood.
